John Fox Needs Surgery

Sad news to report, Denver Broncos head coach John Fox needs aortic heart valve replacement surgery this week. Fox who’s 58, was golfing Saturday afternoon when he complained about being dizzy and light headed. Fox was then rushed to a Charlotte hospital. According to USA Today Fox was told months ago by doctors that he’ll need defective aortic valve heart surgery following the 2013 season. Fox is expected to miss the next several weeks as he recovers from surgery. Broncos are on a bye this weekend, but they’re back in action next Sunday against the Chargers. Our thoughts and prayers are with John, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

5 Things We Learned From Week 7

Week 7 of the NFL was the week of the injuries, as Doug Martin, Jay Cutler, Nick Foles, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Sam Bradford, and Reggie Wayne just to name a few. All left their games with injuries.

1. The Jets finally beat the Patriots to end their six game losing streak against the Pats, and the Pats also saw their 12 game winning streak against the AFC East come to a end by falling 30-27. Geno Smith went 17/33 for 233yards with a td, and 1 INT. He also ran for a touchdown. It was suppose to be a losing season for the Jets where they weren’t expected to win many games, and Rex Ryan was suppose to get fired. But after seven weeks the Jets sit at 4-3. The Pats are now at 5-2 for the season. Is Geno Smith really the long term answer in New York at qb? That’s something time will tell. Although the Patriots lost, I still say they win the AFC East. https://i1.wp.com/cdn3.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/19239581/20130908_gav_ae5_418.0_standard_352.0.jpg

2. Break out the Panthers as they have won a season high 2 games in a row by defeating the Rams on Sunday 30-15. Cam Newton went 15/17 for 204 yards, and 1 touchdown. I’m believing in this Panthers front seven as they racked up 4 sacks against the Rams. Rams lost their QB Sam Bradford for the remainder of the year with a torn ACL. Looks like the Panthers season is going one way, and the Rams season is going in the complete opposite. https://i0.wp.com/www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/38a79a3f486f1ebff4ef130cb35772594a82b466/c=91-71-2811-2116&r=x404&c=534x401/local/-/media/USATODAY/USATODAY/2013/10/20/1382301879000-USP-NFL-St-Louis-Rams-at-Carolina-Panthers.jpg

3. We had a shootout in Detroit, as the Bengals offense out lasted the Lions offense…Thanks to the Bengals kicker Mike Nugent for kicking the game winner as time expired to win 27-24….This game had two of the best receivers in the NFL in Calvin Johnson, and AJ Green. An they didn’t disappoint.  Calvin Johnson went for 155 yards receiving to go along with 2 touchdowns. His most impressive touchdown was a 50 yard touchdown where he caught it in triple coverage. Yes this is a catch that you’ll only see in Madden. If you haven’t seen it, google it. AJ Green matched Calvin with 155 yards receiving, and added a touchdown of his own. The Bengals move to 5-2 on the season, as the Lions fall to 4-3. https://i2.wp.com/img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/002/564/401/ScreenShot2013-10-20at12.47.20PM_crop_north.png

4. The 49ers dominated the Titans by defeating them 31-17. 49ers look like they’re using Colin Kaepernick the way they used him last year, and that’s putting the ball in his hand and letting him run. Kaepernick ran for 68 yards on 11 rushes. His longest run was for 20yards which he scored a touchdown on.  If the 9ers continue to use Kaepernick the way they did last year there’s going to be many defensive coordinators losing sleep on Saturday nights before facing off against Kaepernick. https://i2.wp.com/l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/2y5LVItscBBB8unN2.Onrw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTQyMTtweG9mZj01MDtweW9mZj0wO3E9NzU7dz03NDk-/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/ap_webfeeds/743f55f46203c523400f6a706700510a.jpg

5. Last but not least we have the game of the week in which the Broncos took on the Colts. Yes, the game that’s been promoted all over television for the past several weeks has finally happened. Peyton Manning lead the 6-0 Broncos back to Indy to take on Andrew Luck and the Colts. Peyton scored the first td of the game, but after that it was the Andrew Luck show. As he ran for a touchdown and threw for three more to lead the Colts to the 39-33 upset. I’ll be honest, I was cheering for the Broncos due to Jim Irsay running his mouth all week. But the Broncos had a off night, and the Colts took advantage of that. The only negative for the Colts in this game, is that they lost Reggie Wayne for the season to a torn ACL. They need to find a way to replace his production for the remainder of the season. The Colts are now 5-2 on the year. I hope these two teams meet again in the playoffs.

Five Things We Learned From Week 6

Another Football week has come and gone. I have the Five Things We Learned from Week 6.

1. That Kansas City Chiefs defense is legit. I wasn’t too sure if I should believe the Chiefs hype, but I’m a true believer of their defense. Chiefs defense continued their dominance Sunday as they defeated the Raiders 24-7 to reach 6-0 on the year. The Chiefs sacked Terrelle Pryor 10 times. If the Chiefs get some contribution from players on offense not named Jamaal Charles, they should be in great shape.

2. We have a QB controversy in Philadelphia. Due Michael Vick hamstring injury which he suffered in last weeks game against the Giants. Nick Foles got the start Sunday, and he didn’t disappoint. As he went 22-31 for 296 yards with 3 TDs, and the Eagles defeated the Bucs 31-20. Let’s see if Foles continues his hot play this Sunday against the Cowboys, and if he does who will be the QB in Philly once Vick is healthy?

3.  The Texans lose 4 in a row. It’s shocking that this team lost 4 in a row, due to their high expectations coming into the season. But it’s even more shocking to see them get embarrassed at home like they did against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday by losing 38-13. To make matters worse, Schaub suffered a gruesome leg injury that Texans fans cheered about. I know it’s been a disappointing season for you Texans fans, but have some respect. I never like to see any athlete get injured. I wrote last week about staying with Schaub for the rest of the year, and then addressing the QB situation at the end of the year because I didn’t think TJ Yates or Case Keenum would make a difference. But due to the Schaubs injury Yates was forced into action, and he proved what I said last week was correct. Throwing two interceptions (one was taken back for a TD). There’s a dark cloud over Houston right now. I wish the Texans signed Matt Flynn, and let him be the starter while Schaub is out. That would be a great punishment for the fans that cheered for Schaubs injury on Sunday. But too bad the Bills signed him today.

4. Just because Tom Brady isn’t having the kind of year we’re accustomed to seeing, we can’t forget about how clutch the man is. But if you forgot, he reminded us on Sunday. As he lead the Patriots down the field in the closing seconds to defeat the New Orleans Saints 30-27. The Patriots are now 5-1 on the year, and look like the favorites to win the AFC East. Sorry to all the Patriot fans that left the game early, and didn’t witness Brady throw a TD with 5 seconds remaining to Kenbrell Thompkins.

5. Last but not least, I have to show some love to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although they didn’t win, they didn’t allow the Broncos to cover the 27 pts they were given in Las Vegas betting lines. Instead the Broncos pulled away late to defeat the Jaguars 35-19. This will probably be my first, and last post about the Jaguars all year. So I had to make sure I made it a good one! And if you’re keeping score at home the Jaguars are 0-6. While the Broncos are 6-0.

Julio Jones Done For The Year?

https://i2.wp.com/www.fantasyfootballchallenge.com/images/player_photos/falcons-receiver-julio-jones-runs-after-catch-against-tampa-bay-buccaneers.jpg

This just isn’t the Falcons year. According to reports Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones could be done for the year due to him breaking the screw in his foot that he had inserted following foot surgery back in 2011 vs the New York Jets on Monday night. Jones is expected to get a second opinion on the foot on Wednesday. But it looks like Jones will need season ending surgery. Jones leads the league with 41 catches. It sucks to see a young superstar like Jones miss the remainder of the season.  We wish Julio a speedy recovery.

Five Things We Learned From Week 5

Week 5 has wrapped up, and we have the Five Things We Learned From This Week.

http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1478213.1381128490!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_635/chargers-raiders-football.jpg

1. Terrelle Pryor is here to stay. Pryor has showed major improvement from week to week. In week 4 Pryor was forced to sit out due to a concussion he suffered during the week 3 loss to the Broncos. But Pryor bounced back and looked great in his first game since week 3 getting the Raiders off to a quick 14-0 lead, and never looking back defeating the Chargers 27-14. Pryor went 18-23 for 221yds and 2tds. Raiders may have found their Franchise QB.

https://i1.wp.com/static0.nydailynews.com/imageserve/e559c90e56804660288a7866023588cc/635x500.jpg

2. Geno Smith looks like he’s getting accustomed to the NFL by upsetting the highly favored Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. Geno went 16-20 for 199yds and 3tds. Jets were down 28-27 and Geno led the Jets down the field to setup a Nick Folks 43yd field goal in the game final seconds to defeat the Falcons 30-28. Looks like that 4th and 1 play the Falcons went for with 1sec left before halftime came back to hunt them after all. One positive thing from Geno is he had no turnovers this game for the first time this year. The Falcons now fall to a disappointing 1-4. Note to NFC South teams, don’t win the NFC South because when you do the following year you struggle.

3. Texans need a new QB. The Houston Texans were embarrassed on Sunday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers losing 34-3. Matt Schaub has been turnover prone early on in the year as it continued Sunday night as the Texans QB has had four interceptions returned for TDs over the last four games. I wouldn’t say bench Schaub now because I don’t believe T.J. Yate or Chase Keenum will make a difference, but I believe the Texans should look elsewhere for QB help when the offseason comes around. By the way where are all those Schaub supporters from 3 years ago when you guys had him ranked in the top 10 for your QB rankings?

4. The Colts are for real. Colts defeated the Seahawks Sunday 34-28. I’m not sure if many people gave the Colts a chance but they were ready to face the undefeated Seahawks. Luck lead the Colts to two 4th qtr scores and showed the NFL there’s a way to score on the Seahawks as he hit T.Y Hilton for two big passing tds. One pass went for 73 yards, and the other went for 29 yards. The Seahawks are just not the same on the road as they are when they’re at home. Colts have now defeated the Seahawks and 49ers in the same season. Not too many teams can say that in the NFL.

https://i2.wp.com/www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Drew+Brees+Sean+Payton+Seattle+Seahawks+v+o78GJXuVDb2l.jpg

5. What a difference Sean Payton makes. The Saints moved to 5-0 on the season as they defeated the Chicago Bears 26-18. The Saints look like they’re back after missing their head coach all last year who was suspended due to the Bountygate. With Brees having Payton back running this offense the sky is the limit for this team. The NFC South looks like it’s theirs for the taking.

Donte Whitner Has A Name Change

https://i0.wp.com/cdn2.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/16200795/159793539.0_standard_352.0.jpg

After Whitner was fined 21,000 for his hit last Thursday against St. Louis Rams receiver Chris Givens. Whitner has decided he had enough, and decided to drop the W in his last name and replace it with a H to become Donte Hitner. Now if you do not know, you’re not allowed to change last names during the season unless you’re ready to purchase the remaining of those jerseys which Whitner said he’s willing to do “depending on how many there are”. Hitner added that he’s been called Hitner before the name change “If you ask fans around San Francisco and the Bay Area, they call me Donte Hitner anyway,” Hitner added. “I think it’s pretty cool.  Everything we do is for the fans, right?  We all understand that.  It’s entertainment, but at the same time it’s what I do. It’s my game, along with some things that happened recently, that’s why I went with it.” I hope Godell doesn’t play bully here, and just allow him to change his name to Hitner. I think it’s cool, and a jersey that fans will want to purchase. I can get use to calling him Donte Hitner.

Josh Freeman Benched

http://sinfl.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/freemanapid450699093796.jpg?w=600&h=404

The writing has been on the wall since April, but the Buccaneers have made it official and benched their former 2009 first round pick Josh Freeman. In favor of their 2013 third round pick Mike Glennon. It seemed like this was bound to happen sooner or later with the selection of Glennon in the 2013 draft. There’s been rumors that head coach Greg Schiano and Josh Freeman haven’t seen eye to eye and this is the move that broke the camels back. Freeman was viewed as a franchise quarterback just last year when he passed for 4,065 yards and had 27 tds. Now things have changed and he’s now a backup to a rookie quarterback. According to reports Freeman will request a trade out of Tampa Bay. Glennon had a 16-10 record in his two years starting at North Carolina State. Now he’s expected to become the starting quarterback for the 0-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I think it wasn’t meant for Freeman to succeed this year. He had Glennon looking over his shoulder, and on top of that he had issues with the head coach Greg Schiano. It doesn’t help that Freeman has been bad in his first three games of the year passing for just 571 yards with a passing rating of 59.8. I think Schiano is trying to save his job, because he knows he’s on the hot seat in only his second year in Tampa. There’s been reports about players not buying into him as well so that makes matters worse. If I was the GM of the Jacksonville Jaguars or Minnesota Vikings I would give the Bucs a call to discuss a trade for Freeman, but that’s just me.
